Soil pH controls how well plants take up nutrients, so a bed that is too acidic or too alkaline holds plants back even when everything else is right. This calculator gives a rough starting estimate of how much garden lime raises pH, or how much elemental sulfur lowers it, based on your soil type and the change you want. It is an estimate only. A soil test with a buffer reading is the only way to know the real amount your ground needs.

How this works

I use the change in pH you want, your soil type, and the area. Extension services give rule-of-thumb rates per 100 square feet for each one-point change in pH, and those rates go up from sandy to loam to clay, since heavier soils resist change more. I apply the low and high end of those rates to your numbers, which is why the answer is a range rather than a single figure.

Understanding your result

The range is roughly how much lime or sulfur to work into the top few inches of soil to move the pH by the amount you asked for. Lime works slowly, so allow several months and retest before adding more. Sulfur works even more slowly, since soil bacteria have to convert it, and it is easy to overdo, so start at the low end. Spread the amendment evenly and water it in.

Important limitations

This is an estimate for sizing the job, not a lab recommendation. The real amount depends on your soil's buffering, which only a soil test measures, so two beds reading the same pH can need very different amounts. Do not apply large amounts in one go. If the estimate is high, split it across seasons and retest between applications. Avoid aluminium sulfate as an acidifier, since aluminium can build up and harm roots.
